Biography

Astrid Stockman (1987) studied at the Lemmens Institute (Leuven, Belgium), where in 2009 she earned her Master’s degree in piano with great distinction. In 2012, she was also awarded a Master’s degree (magna cum laude) in singing, studying under Greetje Anthoni and Annelies Meskens. She is currently being coached by Gemma Visser and Zeger Vandersteene.

This season (16/17) she will be singing the role of Madama Butterfly in ‘Before I die’, a production of the Dutch Kameroperahuis and I Solisti Del Vento, premiering at Operadagen Rotterdam. With lab.oratorium and Muziektheater Transparant she creates the soundscape opera ‘Medeamaterial’, which will be performed at the festival OPERA 21. She also plays the role of Marzelinne in Beethoven’s Fidelio by Walpurgis.

Astrid is very passionate about opera and musical theatre. She has performed roles such as Suor Angelica, Belinda and Donna Elvira, and has collaborated with Muziektheater TransparantMuziektheater LOD and Laika. She performed the role of Mimi in the opera ‘Les desventures de Mimi’, a coproduction of BOZAR and L’ Auditori Barcelona, with the National Orchestra of Belgium. She has also performed on major stages and festivals at home and abroad, such as Operadagen Rotterdam (Netherlands), La Monnaie/De Munt, BOZAR, AMUZILT Festival (Denmark), Concertgebouw Brugge, DeSingelCultura Nova (Netherlands), Le Channel (France) etc. 

She was a soloist in several major oratorio compositions by J.S. Bach, Händel, Mozart, Fauré, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Vivaldi and others. Additionally, she has also contributed to the Psallentes ensemble (conducted by Hendrik Vanden Abeele), which focuses on studying and performing plainchant. She is a permanent member of the The Antwerp Baroque Orchestra (conducted by Emmanuel Van Kerckhoven), and regularly performs as a soloist with Scherzi Musicali (conducted by Nicolas Achten) and the European Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Walter Proost).
